Negligence Claims

Operations gone wrong

In cases of medical error, the majority of incidents are related to mistakes made during operating procedures, with over fifty per cent of all adverse events affecting patients undergoing surgery.

With an estimated 1 million mistakes made each year, that works out at around 500,000 medical errors made during operations, no doubt a risky time to lose concentration.

Mistakes range from failing to correct the problem the patient went in for, allowing infection to enter the surgical wound to operating on the wrong body part altogether.

It is important in the case of an operation gone wrong to establish whether the problem is down to a common surgical risk or down to negligence of any of the healthcare providers involved in the surgery.

Where a healthcare provider can be identified as being negligent, we can process a medical negligence claim and ensure that you receive 100 per cent compensation for your botched operation.

Going in for an operation can be a traumatic experience in itself, but to come round from the procedure to discover that all is not well is every patient’s worst nightmare.

Patient horror stories

One patient was shocked and surprised to find that on waking up following surgery, two of his fingers were in bandages rather than one. When he enquired as to what happened he was informed that the surgeon had originally carried out the operation on the wrong finger and then had to go back and operate on the correct finger.

Another woman went in for routine cataract operation and came out with a pain in her eye. She made repeated trips to A&E where she was fobbed off with antibiotics for an infection which she did not have. Eventually emergency surgery was carried out, leaving her blind in one eye.

Another woman found that she was left crippled after a hip operation meant to make her more mobile was carried out incorrectly. She described the ensuing pain as feeling like ‘100 hot pokers going through your leg and up into your hip.’

All of these mistakes could have been avoided had the surgeon and the pre and post care teams been working attentively and efficiently.

Avoidable mistakes leading to patient suffering are unacceptable and we aim to win compensation for all of our clients in an attempt to alleviate some of the suffering caused.
